Delphine and Lyra wait in my chambers the next morning before the kitchen maid brings our meal. Lennox’s firm knock at the door alerts us to her arrival and Delphine dutifully opens the door as though I can’t be bothered to do such menial tasks on my own. This dynamic feels unnatural now but I was taught the ways of royalty early and know it would be viewed with suspicion if I did these simple actions for myself. The maid dips her head and silently leaves the tray covered with dishes before scurrying back into the hallway, avoiding eye contact with Lennox as though he might gobble her up.

Dread skips down my spine when I find a note beside the pot of tea and dish of eggs on my breakfast tray. A glob of black wax holds the edges together and my appetite disappears when I open it to find a note from Blackwell himself.
